Kevin Hart’s I Can’t Make This Up Is The Self-Help Book You Never Thought You Needed

Of course, once you get over the fact that I Can’t Make This Up isn’t even really a self-help book.

No seriously, as shocking as it may be, Kevin Hart’s new book, I Can’t Make This Up, isn’t classified as a self-help book. Although I really wish it was. As someone who has tried to read several books for their own “personal enhancement”, I’ve never really been able to take in what those books were saying. Books like “Big Magic” and “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life“, never seem to keep me interested for too long. So I’ve never finished them.

The issue with “self-help” books are: they’re boring!

Ridiculously boring! So by the time I’m a chapter in, I’ve pretty much given up. But I Can’t Make This Up is not only funny on the inside, it’s even funny on the outside. I mean from the silly front cover photo, to the raving “quotes” on the back, to the table of contents descriptions and even the chapter titles. It’s all one big book full of laughter and delightfully, inspiring stories. There’s also a ton of great advice. (That I need to go back and highlight for future references. Lol)

“You see, Kevin Hart’s I Can’t Make This Up may not be classified as a self-help book, but it might as well be.”

I Can’t Make This Up

You see, Kevin Hart’s I Can’t Make This Up may not be classified as a self-help book, but it sure as hell has enough advice in it, that it might as well be. I think that’s what I love about this book. It doesn’t say, I’m going to help make you a better person if you read me right now. But once you start reading, you begin to realize that he’s giving out a lot of great advice. Some of which I probably need to take. (Okay, all of which I need to take.)

Which is why I need to reread this book and highlight everything.

I Can’t Make This Up isn’t promising to change your life, but I truly believe that once you do read this book, it will. From the moment I started reading this, I began to see things differently. I started trying to think the way Kevin thinks. Not just because he’s funny, and I really wish I was his friend (okay that was random, lol) but because he has a great mindset. He didn’t let the negative things get to him and he used his negatives to push him further.

“He tells you straight up, yeah, I hit her, and yeah … I shouldn’t have done that. I’m not proud of that.”

What’s even better is that he doesn’t tell you he’s this happy-go-lucky guy. He doesn’t pretend to have it all together. He tells you straight up, yeah, I hit her, and yeah, I shouldn’t have done that. I’m not proud of that. I was in a really bad place, I messed up, but still … I shouldn’t have done that, and you shouldn’t do that either. Most people try to sell you that they’re always happy, and guess what? It’s a bunch of bull! I’ve seen those happy go-lucky-people when they’re depressed! They go through shit just like we do. They’re just better at hiding it. But why should we even have to hide that side of us? To make people think we’re always okay? (I’d rather not. I don’t have the energy to pretend.)

I Can’t Make This Up

So yes, Kevin Hart’s book may not be a self-help book, and it may not advertise that it can help. But I’m telling you it’s helped me and it may even be able to help you. His stories are hilarious, but if you’ve watched his comedy sets, you already knew that. However, he also shows you the bad in his life. He doesn’t just laugh at it in this book, he’s completely honest with you on what went wrong, why it went wrong, how it could have gone differently, but didn’t and what he did to overcome it. Isn’t that what a self-help book is supposed to do?

So if you haven’t already done so, make sure you get a copy of his new book. (Be sure to have a highlighter and/or pen handy so you can highlight and take notes. Lol, I’m not kidding. There’s some really good stuff in this book!) I’m really hoping he’ll talk to Will, and they’ll make a movie out of this book because I’d love to see this thing in action. (Don’t know who Will is? Buy and read the darn book and find out damn it! Lol)

Now talk to me. Do you plan on buying his new book? Did you read his first book? Are you even a fan of Kevin Hart? (I guess I can’t assume that just because you read this entire thing right? Lol) Leave a comment below and let me know. If you have any specific questions about this book, what it talks about, or his fights with his ex-wife, Torrei, feel free to leave those in a comment as well. Lol (So serious!)
